Kwazulu-Natal Surf -Yoga Trip

In May 2017 I spent two weeks in beautiful Kwazulu-Natal photographing Unravel Surf Travel Surf Trip with a group of Russian trevellers.

It was the third time that we returned to KwaZulu-Natal for a Surf Trip and for the third year in a row we traveled with a group of clients, all eager to learn surfing while exploring the natural beauty of Southern Africa. Enjoy the photo highlights of the trip.

Louis Oosthuizen Golf Day

Louis Oosthuizen partnered with Pinnacle Point Golf Estate , raising funds for the Pinnacle Point Golf Academy. The day included demonstrations by leading equipment manufacturers, free golf lessons and chipping and putting clinics. Louis Oosthuizen, who was generously sponsoring the fundraiser for the golf academy, was also ready to answer questions from golf enthusiasts and demonstrate his remarkable skills as he took to the award-winning golf course.

Dirty Thirties at Gannet

A Russian Birthday party at the Gannet, Mossel Bay. Last month I photographed a real Russian dirty thirties party: full of funny games and shots! Thank you Yulia for a cool evening, good company and good food. Not every day you got asked as a photographer to do a Russian dance with the guests:)

Ross Taylor Surf Contest 2014, Buffels Bay, South Africa

The Surfer Kids NON-Profit have become an integral part of the annual Ross Taylor Surf Contest. This was the fourth consecutive year that The Surfer Kids attended the event! It is without a doubt one of the highlights on the programme’s calendar and the kids look forward to this weekend all year long!

The event is held annually in Buffels Bay (South Africa) in memory of Ross Taylor, a local surfer who died of cancer. His final wish was that a surf contest be held in his memory, the proceeds of which would be donated to Hospice, after the care and support they had provided to him and his family in the final years of his debilitating illness.

The Surfer Kids is a Non-Profit Organisation operated by Unravel Surf Travel OUTREACH. The programme works with kids from a local rural primary-school and high-school. Its mission is to explore and teach life skills, using surfing and travelling as a medium, in a marginalised rural community.

The Surfer Kids Non Profit also offers a voluntour program, a combination of volunteer work with the kids and a travelling experience in South Africa.

The Surfer Kids attendance at the Ross Taylor event has been made possible by the support of the organising committee. We would like to thank them for their crucial support, without which we would not be able to spend the weekend in Buffels Bay at the Ross Taylor Surf Contest.

Ross Taylor Surf Contest 2013

Fourteen children from Friemersheim travelled with The Surfer Kids NON-Profit and programme coordinators to Buffels Bay, to partake in the Ross Taylor Benefit Surf Contest from 9 to 11 August.

The Surfer Kids NON-Profit is based in Friemersheim, a rural farming community situated 30km outside Mossel Bay. They offer surfing lessons and travelling opportunities to the children of Friemersheim on a strictly non-profit basis.

They camped in Buffelskop Caravan Park for the long weekend, just outside Buffels Bay. Camping and entry fees into the contest were taken care of by the Ross Taylor event organisers. Transport and logistical support was provided by Unravel Surf Travel and Nan Jamieson from Buffels Bay Lifesavers. Food for the weekend was covered by donations from within the community of Friemersheim and private donations from generous Mossel Bay residents.

The Surfer Kids NON-Profit entered four children into the boys’ u/16 division, two into the Development Girls division and six into the Development Boys division. The Surfer Kids NON-Profit program coordinator, and co-founder, Hermann Vivier, was responsible for running the Development Boys, Development Girls, Grommets u/12 boys and Grommets u/12 girls divisions at the Ross Taylor Benefit Surf Contest. Over 50 kids entered these four divisions. Three children made it into the finals, representing the top four surfers in each division. Luciano Windvogel and Stephan Joubert finished fourth and third, respectively in the Development Boys final, while Yasmin Nortje finished first in the Development Girls division, taking home the coveted winners’ floating trophy!

The Ross Taylor Benefit Surf Contest is an annual event held in memory of local surfer Ross Taylor, who lost his life to cancer at the age of 29. All funds raised by this event is donated towards Hospice, which was Ross’s charity of choice after the care and support that they provided to him and his family in his last years. Through the support Hospice receives from the Ross Taylor event, they are able to provide care for over 500 terminally ill people every year.
